Richard McMullen

Joseph Richard Ernest McMullen (“Richard”) passed away rather unexpectedly on January 27, 2024 at the age of 82 – with his loving wife, Audrey, by his side.
Richard began his career in the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 16 as a boy soldier. He had a successful 38 year career which involved several postings across Canada, as well as Belgium and Cambodia/Vietnam.
He was quite the athlete and enjoyed playing many sports including baseball, hockey and football. Table tennis was a favorite in his later years and he competed and won many medals in several BC Senior Games.
Following retirement, Richard and Audrey settled in Victoria, British Columbia to be closer to their children and many grandchildren. Richard was a wonderful grandpa who evoked many smiles and giggles.
He will be fondly remembered for his caring, fun-loving and entertaining nature – and for his love of music and dancing.
Survived by his wife, Audrey; step-children, Tracee (Pat) and Erin (Kevin); children, Sandra, Nancy, Andrew and Keith; and 11 grandchildren, Richard will be greatly missed.
Richard suffered from dementia for many years and had been a resident of the Veteran’s Memorial Lodge, Broadmead for the past 14 months. The family would like to thank the staff – especially the healthcare workers, creative arts, music and activity workers, nurses and Dr. Nicoll – who all helped to make this difficult journey a little easier. We appreciate their dedication and hard work.
If you wish to make a donation in Richard’s memory, please consider Broadmead Care’s Veterans Memorial Lodge or the Alzheimer’s Society.
