Bringing ‘hearts for happiness’ to Veterans Memorial Lodge

For the fourth year in a row, St. Margaret’s student Lois (on the right in the photo) has brought ‘Hearts for Happiness’ to the people who live at Veterans Memorial Lodge, a Broadmead Care Home, on Valentine’s Day.

It all started during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021 the then-grade-seven student Lois felt badly for seniors who were under Public Health Order restrictions for visitation. So she decided to do something about it! She organized students at St. Margaret’s school in Victoria to create hand-crafted valentines – one for each of the 225 residents at Veterans Memorial Lodge! She also baked each person a special Valentine’s Day cookie.

During COVID-19, Lois had to deliver the cookies remotely, and was only able to visit with one person via a window visit. It wasn’t until 2023 when she was able to come inside in person. This year, as in 2023, Lois spent time with many residents, hand delivering the Valentine’s Day cards and cookies, and visiting with people.

It takes a special heart to care for seniors, and we are humbled by Lois’s gift not just to the people who received a card and cookie, but also to the community of care that surrounds us. Thank you, Lois, for your generous and compassionate spirit, and for sharing the gift of YOU with Broadmead Care.
