Victoria Chinatown Care Centre is a long term care Home that has served Victoria’s Chinese community since 1982. Located in the heart of Canada’s oldest Chinatown, the Home provides culturally sensitive, person-centred care that celebrates Chinese language, cultural traditions, and community connections.

Victoria Chinatown Care Centre provides a warm, culturally rich, and home-like environment in the heart of downtown Victoria. People who live here are supported to experience comfort, dignity, and a strong sense of belonging every day.

Daily life offers opportunities for meaningful engagement through recreation, music, cultural activities, and social connection. Chinese language, traditions, and cuisine are thoughtfully woven into everyday life, helping people stay connected to their culture while receiving compassionate, person-centred care.

Families, staff, volunteers, and community members all play an important role in creating a welcoming and supportive environment where meaningful relationships can flourish.

Accommodation and Cost

Victoria Chinatown Care Centre offers private and semi-private accommodations within a small, community-focused setting.

  • There are 30 private rooms and one shared room
  • Each room includes a two-piece bathroom
  • Comfortable lounge and dining spaces on each floor
  • Access to a garden courtyard and shared living areas

As a publicly subsidized long term care Home, costs are determined by Island Health and are based on income, generally up to 80% of after-tax income.

Medical Care

Medical Care

Residents receive 24-hour nursing care and support from an interdisciplinary team.

Care services include:

  • Nursing and personal care
  • Medication management
  • Access to physicians and health professionals
  • Pharmacy Services
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Support for complex health needs and end-of-life care

Care is delivered using a person-centred approach that promotes dignity, comfort, and independence while respecting each person’s language, culture, traditions, and independence.

Visiting Information

Family and friends are an important part of life at Victoria Chinatown Care Centre, and visitors are welcome.

Visiting is guided by current health and safety protocols to ensure the wellbeing of residents, staff, and guests. Shared indoor and outdoor spaces are available to support meaningful visits and connection.

During influenza season (typically December-March), to help protect patients from the flu, all visitors will be asked to wear a mask in our facilities if they have not had a flu shot. For more information, please read Island Health’s Frequently Asked Questions and Influenza Protection Policy.

Provincial policy requires all visitors to be informed: “Violence, foul language and abusive behaviours are not acceptable. Verbal threats or acts of violence will not be tolerated and may result in removal from this facility and/or prosecution.”

Events

Victoria Chinatown Care Centre offers a variety of recreational and cultural programs that support engagement and wellbeing.

Activities may include:

  • Music, singing, and cultural celebrations
  • Chinese opera, calligraphy, and traditional arts
  • Exercise programs such as chair tai chi
  • Social activities, games, and outings in the Chinatown community

Programs are designed to reflect residents’ interests and cultural backgrounds while encouraging connection and participation.

Volunteers

Volunteers help enrich daily life at Victoria Chinatown Care Centre by offering companionship, supporting recreation and cultural activities, sharing music and games, accompanying people on neighbourhood walks, and helping care for our courtyard garden. Volunteers who speak Mandarin or Cantonese also help people stay connected through conversation in their preferred language. Every visit brings comfort, joy, and a sense of community to the people who call Victoria Chinatown Care Centre home.
