How do I leave a legacy gift in my will?

A gift in your Will to Broadmead Care is a generous promise to provide comfort, safety, security, and wellbeing for our amazing community of care, forever. We are honoured that you are helping to secure the future of Canada’s veterans, seniors, and adults with disabilities with a gift in your Will.

It takes a special heart to spend time, energy, and resources to support our Purpose to build communities where every person can experience wellbeing and happiness. When you leave a gift to Broadmead Care in your Will, you join your heart with our community. Your legacy will help bring joy, purpose, and loving care for everyone who lives and works in our Homes.

Why act?

Our Homes are often the last place a person will live. While we take care of them, we want them to experience joy, feel a sense of purpose, and live as fully as possible. To make this happen, Broadmead Care needs a reliable and stable source of funding.

Why now?

We need to secure the future for the people who live with us, today. Your legacy gift could help fund dementia programs that engage mind and body. You could direct your gift to support special equipment. You could help fund renovations that make daily tasks easier and create a comfortable, homelike environment. You could fund a staff and student scholarship and bursary program to help educate future caregivers.

Why me?

We can’t do it without you. Your legacy gift will have a tremendous impact on the daily lives of those living in long term care, and bring joy to those who need it most. Your generosity will help Broadmead Care fulfill its Purpose: To build communities where every person can experience wellbeing and happiness.

Where do I start?

There are two things you need to do before you create your legacy gift, and they both typically involve professional help.

  1. First, determine approximately how much you might have to give. A financial advisor can help you determine how much you will need to live in comfort. She or he can also advise about how much you might give to family and loved ones.
  2. Second, is to consult with a lawyer and either create your first or update your current Will. This is the document that makes your legacy come alive.

Which type of gift is right for me?

There are several gift options that are available to you for estate planning. Below is a list of common options for legacy giving. Please note: we encourage and expect you to consult a professional advisor to determine the best option for you.

Gift in your will

Known as a ‘bequest’, this form of legacy giving costs nothing now, and allows you to support something you care about. You retain complete control over and use of your assets during your lifetime. You may change your bequest at any time.

Securities

A gift of securities is one of the most cost-effective ways to support Broadmead Care, immediately, or through a gift in your Will. When publicly listed securities are donated to Broadmead Care, the tax on the capital gains is eliminated.

RRSPs, RRIFs, or TFSAs

Giving retirement assets is one of the easiest, most tax-effective ways to support us. Many do not realize that, upon passing, the total value of your registered retirement accounts must be reported as income. This kind of gift can offset taxes for your estate.

Life Insurance Policy and Charitable Remainder Trusts

You can name Broadmead Care as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, or by making a substantial donation with an irrevocable trust.

The information on this page is not legal or financial advice. Broadmead Care encourages donors to contact their professional advisors when considering a gift of publicly listed securities.
