Bringing wellbeing and happiness to life requires support from the entire community.
At Broadmead Care, a non profit Society, we believe love, life, and living matter. Our goal in all our Homes and Adult Day Programs is to help everyone live fully in a warm, welcoming environment where they feel a sense of belonging, respect, acceptance, and joy.
Our Purpose is simple: To create communities where everyone can experience wellbeing and happiness.
Your donations help us provide enhanced programs and personalized care, ensuring those we serve can live with joy and purpose. By supporting us, you directly improve the lives of the people in our care.
Thank you for helping us achieve our Purpose — because we truly believe that love, life, and living matter.
About Broadmead Care
Who is Broadmead Care?
Broadmead Care Society is a non-profit organization. It is incorporated under the BC Societies Act, and recognized as a registered charity under the Income Tax Act. This means we do not seek to make a profit. As a non-profit Society with a volunteer Board of Directors, all funds we receive are invested in programs and services. Because none of the funds are reserved for profit, we can offer affordable living options.
This means we can focus entirely on our Purpose: To build communities where every person can experience wellbeing and happiness.
How does Broadmead Care receive funding?
Broadmead Care receives funding from Island Health, Veterans Affairs Canada, and monthly payments from the people who live in our Homes.
The funding we receive covers the basics: buildings, heat, light, food, and 24/7 staff who provide compassionate, top-notch care for the people who live in our Homes.
In addition to basic operating costs, we apply annually for items that are essential, but aren’t covered by funding. You might be surprised to learn that this includes specialized or upgraded equipment that ensures safety, comfort, and dignity. Think: overhead lifts, slings, tub chairs, physiotherapy and occupational therapy supplies, blanket and towel warmers, bed alarms, call bell systems … and the list goes on.
This also include programs like Creative Arts, Music, Entertainment, outings, and other activities that bring joy to the people who live in our Homes. In some cases, as at Nigel House, we fundraise to provide companions to accompany people to medical appointments. Imagine if you couldn’t go see the doctor because no one was available to help you, and you couldn’t afford to hire someone on your own. That’s where you come in: your donations help provide day-to-day assistance and enjoyment that many of us take for granted.
The financial landscape is challenging. The demand for crucial programs, specialized equipment, and services often exceeds our funding by a ratio of 3:1. This means that for every $100 in funding we ask for, we receive $30. We need to find the other $70 from alternate sources like grants, events, or fundraising campaigns.
That’s why donations from generous supporters like you are vital. Your contributions help us enhance people’s quality of life by filling the 70% gap.
The heart of philanthropy
Compassion in Action: what it means to give
Giving isn’t just about money; it’s about heart. It’s about seeing a need and stepping up to fill it.
Wendy’s mom lived at Veterans Memorial Lodge. Wendy visited her mom often, and saw how people laughed together over a craft project, or enjoyed a musical performance. She knew how much activities like this meant to her mom. Moved by this, Wendy and her family make donations to fund more activities, knowing their gifts keeps those smiles alive.
And Wendy’s philanthropic spirit doesn’t stop there: she volunteers one or two mornings a week in the gift store. She spends time chatting with family members, residents, and staff alike.
Wendy knows that philanthropy is also about building meaningful connections.
Philanthropy goes beyond writing a cheque. Yes, it’s about the impact of your donation for people who need it most. It’s also about relationships. When you give to support important programs and activities in Broadmead Care Homes, you’re building a connection with us. And, you’re helping people make connections with each other! Meaningful activities also bring a connection to people’s pasts — things they enjoyed doing in their younger days, or with their families.
Your kindness puts joy into action.
Long term care thrives when kindness is its foundation.
Philanthropy ensures there’s more than just the basics. Your donations create the cozy reading nooks, the gardens and courtyards, entertainment programs, creative arts projects, and so much more.
These extras exist because of donors like you. These are the things that turn a ‘facility’ into a true Home, where people feel valued and loved.
Philanthropy is a cornerstone of all Broadmead Care’s Homes.
How your gifts transform lives
Your donations create environments that feel like home.
Imagine an ordinary dining room transformed into a vibrant space filled with comfortable chairs, bright murals, and a fish tank in the corner. That’s what your support does. Thanks to donors, family, staff, and volunteers, people on the third floor of Rest Haven Lodge, a Broadmead Care Home, fill the dining room with laughter and movement as they dance to a live performance, or enjoy games using an overhead projector known as the Magic Table.
Donations from people like you have made all this possible. Where there once was silence, now joy fills the air, and love lives in the breaths between the laughter.
More than upgrades to buildings, philanthropy create spaces where life happens.
The people who provide care in our Homes give their all to look after loved ones. They need support, too. Thanks to generous giving, people like Loida (photo, left) at Beckley Farm Lodge has the training, equipment, and tools she needs to look after people with safety and dignity for all. Your gift makes this possible, and your generosity makes a world of difference!
Your generous heart creates a more vibrant, compassionate community.
A spirit of philanthropy creates communities: themed dinner nights, exercise classes, and family events, that bring people together. These vibrant moments create bonds between residents, staff, families, and volunteers. It’s your generosity that turns ideas into realities, building a compassionate, thriving environment.
A culture of philanthropy isn’t really about a one-time act of giving. It’s a journey. Each time you give, you grow.
Philanthropy becomes part of who you are, enriching your life in unexpected and rewarding ways.
What’s next?
Become a changemaker.
Starting your philanthropic journey is easy. Whether you donate money, volunteer your time, or share a skill, every bit helps. More than 60% of our donations come from people who give between $5 and $100.
And the people who volunteer their time mean so much to us. And Mary, who volunteers with the art program at Beckley Farm Lodge, feels like she gets more out of the program than she puts in!
There are so many ways to get involved: join one of our events, make a donation, volunteer with us, or simply spread the word.
Your involvement is the gift that makes a difference for someone’s life.
