SUMMARY

The Veterans Memorial Lodge at Broadmead is a 229-bed residential care facility with 115 priority access beds for veterans, 110 beds for seniors in the community and four respite care beds for veterans. The Lodge is the primary priority access bed facility for veterans on Vancouver Island.

The Veterans Memorial Lodge at Broadmead is situated in the Greater Victoria community of Saanich.  It was one of the first residential care facilities in B.C. to be built to the multi-level care guidelines of the Ministry of Health and it continues to be a facility of choice on southern Vancouver Island.

Resident demographics:

  • Average age - 89
  • 60% men, 40% women
  • 87% are 81 or older
  • Average length of stay is 18 months
  • 93% of residents have moderate to severe cognitive impairment including dementia
  • 75% of residents have a moderate to high need for help with transferring or moving

The Night Nurse works under the administrative supervision of the Assistant Director of Clinical Programs (ADoCP). The Night Nurse provides nursing care to residents in collaboration with Health Care Worker’s and other health care providers within a multidisciplinary team.

The Night Nurse carries out nursing functions related to the safe care of clients and residents of the Broadmead Care Society, including providing clinical direction to the Health Care Workers and delivering direct care to residents, in accordance with the Professional Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses of BC and the Mission and Vision of the Broadmead Care Society.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Graduate of a recognized nursing program.
  • Current registration with CRNBC or CRPNBC

Experience:

  • Recent experience in long-term care

Skills / Abilities:

  • Clinical knowledge and skills applicable to residential care and mental health.
  • Able to monitor and guide the care provided by care workers in a team environment.
  • Sound judgment, good observation and assessment skills.
  • Able to deal with others effectively.
  • Able to problem solve.
  • Able to foster effective working relationships with all member of the care team.
  • Able to organize and prioritize work.
  • Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, with tact and empathy.
  • Able to act as a professional role model.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Able to operate related equipment.
